Sewer, gas mask & prologue routes

Quick answer

The tutorial sewer route is for Tech specialization. The starting gas mask is for the medical specialization. A Criminal player found a back-door route.

If you are stuck around the tutorial turrets, check your non-combat specialization before hunting for a missing tool. The developer says the sewer route belongs to Tech characters and the starting gas mask belongs to the medical specialization. Those are different openings, not equipment every character is supposed to collect.

Opening areas offer different interactions for different characters. Examine each entrance and its requirements.

The route depends on the character

The first two conditions come from direct developer replies. The back door comes from a Criminal player's successful follow-up in the sewer discussion. It gives that build a useful place to look without becoming a universal direction for every character.

Why you cannot get into the sewer

A player asked where to find a repair kit to get into the tutorial sewer and pass the turrets. The developer replied that this route is for a technical non-combat specialization.

Check the specialization chosen at character creation. If it is Tech, return to the interaction and read its description or requirement. If it is another profession, stop treating the sewer as a mandatory checkpoint. The problem may be finding your own route rather than obtaining the item another character used.

This distinction also helps with videos. A walkthrough showing sewer access does not establish that its route is available to your character. Compare the profession first; then decide which instructions apply.

Why the gas mask disappears after restarting

A player restarted with a different build and could no longer see the mask on the wall mount in the sheriff's office. Higher attentive/perception did not reveal it. The developer explained that the mask is only for the medical non-combat specialization.

Changing perception is therefore an unhelpful fix for this particular problem. Check whether the restarted character has the medical profession. If not, the earlier character's item access does not tell you what should appear for the new one.

Do not take poison while searching merely because a previous run had protective equipment. The same player reported finding another way around the gassed alley but suffering poison during the attempt. Reconsider the route and interactions before turning damage into your navigation method.

If you chose Criminal

In the sewer thread, the developer asked which peaceful specialization the stuck player had chosen. The player answered Criminal, then returned to say they found a back door.

For Criminal, inspect the alternate entrance instead of continuing to search for Tech equipment. Look at the map and connected spaces, and reread the opening directions. A door irrelevant to a different profession can be the more useful interaction this time.

The developer's follow-up recommends the organizer, quest hints and map. Use them together; an entrance described in conversation is easier to identify when matched to the local layout.

Examine connected spaces and object descriptions. The most obvious entrance may not serve your profession.

A five-step reset when the opening stalls

  1. Check the profession. Identify this character's specialization, not your previous run's.
  2. Open the organizer. Reread the conversation that introduced the objective.
  3. Read the quest entry. Look for any lightbulb hint; some entries add a navigation clue.
  4. Compare the map. Match the mentioned entrance or direction with connected areas.
  5. Try the relevant interaction. Read the requirement before searching for another profession's supplies.

Once moving again, return to the first-run plan. If considering a restart, read character creation so you understand the trade-off you are changing.

Is a restart necessary?

A blocked specialization route alone is not a reason to restart. Different characters receive different ways to solve problems. Look for your current character's route before replacing the character just to copy somebody else's opening.

An interaction locking control is a different problem. The launch roadmap lists a control lock caused by clicking a ladder during the Creditor's approach. Check the Early Access notes and keep a manual save before the affected sequence while the fix is pending.
